Omega 3 and eye pressure: context matters

A percentage in a headline can sound like a definitive answer. Before applying it to your own health, ask who was studied and which outcome the researchers actually measured.

01 ยท What was studied

In 2018, Downie and Vingrys analysed data from 105 adults without glaucoma, drawn from two randomised trials. After three months, the Omega 3 group showed lower intraocular pressure relative to placebo. Read the original research.

02 ยท What it does not establish

The finding concerned eye pressure: it did not establish that supplements prevented glaucoma. The authors called for further research. Conclusions and limitations. When reading a health story, separate the measured result from the promise in the headline.

03 ยท Eye examinations matter

Glaucoma can begin without symptoms and damage the optic nerve. An eye examination helps assess it; treatment can involve eye drops, laser or surgery. Information from the National Eye Institute. Do not replace prescribed treatment with a supplement.

04 ยท Three questions for your appointment

What is my personal risk? When should I return for checks? Are the products I take compatible with my treatment? Bring the product names and any relevant reports: a specific conversation is more useful than an isolated percentage.
